His name is Guts, the Black Swordsman, a feared warrior spoken of only in whispers. Bearer of a gigantic sword, an iron hand, and the scars of countless battles and tortures, his flesh is also indelibly marked with The Brand, an unholy symbol that draws the forces of darkness to him and dooms him as their sacrifice. But Guts won't take his fate lying down; he'll cut a crimson swath of carnage through the ranks of the damned -- and anyone else foolish enough to oppose him! Accompanied by Puck the Elf, more an annoyance than a companion, Guts relentlessly follows a dark, bloodstained path that leads only to death...or vengeance. Created by Kenturo Miura, Berserk is manga mayhem to the extreme -- violent, horrifying, and mercilessly funny -- and the wellspring for the internationally popular anime series. Not for the squeamish or the easily offended, Berserk asks for no quarter -- and offers none!

* One of the most eagerly anticipated manga properties in recent years, Berserk was originally published in Japan and has been serialized in Young Animal Magazine since the early 1990's.

I couldn't have been happier with this purchase. The package was in absolutely perfect condition, and it actually shipped and was delivered a bit earlier than what I expected. I definitely know where I will be taking my business from now on. ^-^

  • Sep 01, 2009 Ryan from Stanhope

The volume that started it all, this series has been going for over twenty years and is so good I've re-read it from beginning to its current volume 4 or more times. I will warn you this is not a kiddy manga, If you think Naruto is graphic I've got news for you, You've never seen a guy get ripped in half by a huge claymore with his intestines and other organs flying all over the place. Anyway to the point Berserk at first seemed to be an excuse for over the top violence between the black swordsman, Guts, and the forces of well... evil. The greatest ark starts on the last chapter of volume 3, volumes 1 and 2 are a great way to get involved in the series to show you who sadistic guts was at the beginning. It's one of the few series that has an effective and gradual change of character. And add to boot that Kentaro Miura (the mangaka) is one the best artists to come to the manga front, each volume is literally stunning. Add to that fact that with each volume his craftsmanship becomes better by the time you get to volume 30 you're looking at a masterpiece. If you're tired of kiddy manga and want to embark on what has come to be known as an epic tale then I strongly recommend you pick up berserk.

Words can not describe what this comic brings to the table. I have to say that berserk has a great impact on my life, therefore I'm sure that there no other fans like me because i want to get the brand symbol tattoo on my neck and guts on my arm. Like I said there are no other fans like me. It even made me start collecting toys again, and I'm 25 year old, and also made me want to get back on the football field. I love you Dark Horse for putting this in Engish, you will know who I am just watch the Dallas Cowboys!!! I will appear and then you can get in contact with me. God bless and keep up the good work.

What can I say...the beginning of what is quite possibly the single greatest epic ever told. This is not just something to convince naysayers of manga, but this is enough to convince anyone of the possibillities of the comic medium. A true masterpiece. Masterful action sequences, deep character development, and an absolutely phenomenal story. It REALLY doesn't get much better than this. Now if only Dark Horse would release them a little more frequently, since it's already up to volume 28 in Japan.

This is the best storyline i have ever read. At first you might be fooled by the bloody scenes but there's a very rich and deep storyline. Get this book while its available. just picked it up yesterday and it was worth every red cent. The anime TV show on DVD was incredible but unfortunately they choose not to continue the 2nd season so the storyline ended ubruptly. This manga translations finally gives you a chance to get the entire storyline. I thought nothing i would ever see or read would be better than Berserk anime and i was right except the Berserk Manga which is translated to english for your pleasure. You will not regret it, if you buy this.

Love the Anime Series, and have wanted to find out what happens after the end of the series. It's about time they came out with an English version of the Manga, hopefully they will come out with another anime series.

  • Oct 21, 2003 Gylfi from Hollywood, Fl

I'm foaming at the mouth...why must such a good series take so long... If it takes any longer i might go rabid waiting for it

  • Oct 04, 2003 Chris from Bangor, WA

In short, Never before has any series--whether it be a TV series, book, manga, or anime--left such a lasting impression, as did Berserk. If you like a series for the well-told story, for the characters, the fights, the sound track, or simply because you're looking for something different, you will love Berserk. But, yes, after you finish the series and are left with an insatiable appetite for more, you will soon find the manga, and you'll discover that the series is only the tip of the iceberg. The manga unhesitantly explores every facet of term 'dark'--torture, rape, senseless slaughter, betrayal, and incredible violence all on such levels that the series, as adult as it is, may seem but a shadow in comparison. I have been waiting years for a chance to purchase a hard copy of the manga, as I know for a fact that it will be the best money I've ever spent on anime. -'Shalist,' the self-proclaimed fan of Berserk.
