Leading the Midland forces are the Band of the Hawk, lead by the charismatic Griffith, with the fearless Guts as his trusted champion. Without a doubt, the story of Gatsu is one of serious depth. Even if you have seen the anime and think you know it all, the books that move from the first moments of the Black Swordsman through the Great Eclipse reveal pieces of the story that enrich the characters and make them more human. Volume eight picks up the story during the conquest of Doldrey.
The translation feels much more natural that the clunky anime scripts, and the characters, therefore, are more real to the reader. Also, the violence is considerably more graphic, which in my opinion only serves to emphasize Guts' bloody path through life.
Whether for or against the gore, Volume 8 is certainly more tame than some of the others. In any event, this book is perhaps the most important of the early ones because it is the turning point, the crux. A must buy.
