One of Serenity's greatest mysteries is finally revealed in Shepherd's Tale, filling in the life of one of the show's most beloved characters--Shepherd Book!

Who was Book before meeting Mal and the rest of the Serenity crew, how did he become one of their most trusted allies, and how did he find God in a bowl of soup? Answers to these and more questions about Book's past are uncovered in this original graphic novel by rising stars Zack Whedon (Dr. Horrible, Terminator, Fringe) and Chris Samnee (Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps, Daredevil). A pivotal chapter in the ongoing Serenity saga, Shepherd's Tale is also a rollicking, action-packed epic in its own right!

* Shepherd Book's past finally revealed!

* Dark Horse has sold over 125,000 copies of the original Serenity trade paperback!

"Dark Horse's Serenity displays the key ingredients of the series in a substantial and entertaining way."

So nice to finally see Shepherd Book's backstory...the plot bunnies in the show never got answered until now. Well worth reading!

  • Oct 10, 2013 John Kendall from Granbury, TX

Great story, I always wanted to see Shepard's back story and this one is great!

  • Nov 12, 2012 Steven from United States

An amazing look into Book's backstroy, which is sure to keep you on your toes. A final answer to the mystery that is Shepard Book

There is much to be said for an easy ordering and receiving process. I recommend TFAW to all my friends.

Was pleasantly surprised that this is a hardbound book and not soft cover. A must have for Firefly fans as it fills in the back story of the Shepherd Book character. This is told in the non-linear format similar to the Firefly episode "out of gas".

  • Feb 17, 2012 Manolis from greece

    Just perfect

I was expecting a lot more when I read what this comic was to be about - the life, history and experiences of Shepherd Book. It certainly built itself up to be a tell-all history of an otherwise mysterious and fascinating character. Instead, it too briefly and too quickly dashes over his entire life without stopping for breath, or emotional impact. Book's story- in my opinion - could have easily spanned 4 separate issues by itself, and instead is squished into one tiny volume with very thick pages. It's a mixed bag for me. It's a definite buy for those who compulsively need to complete their collections (like me), but it's overpriced, especially for the hardcover version, and if you can read this somewhere online for free, or borrow it from someone else and avoid buying the book altogether, I would.

Great graphic novel. The story, while short, is very emotional and will mean a lot to any Firefly and Serenity fan. The story structure is very original, and the art is beautifully drawn and coloured; the locations and characters being depicted look and feel real without losing the stylized nature of a comic book. The flashback structure was occasionally slightly confusing, but the story is so good that it more than makes up for it. I also like how it doesn't quite give us all the answers regarding Book's past, keeping some of the mystery around the character and allowing the reader to figure some of it out on their own. The book itself is brilliantly presented, and the afterword by Zack Whedon was really interesting. Overall, a very impressive graphic novel that anyone, but especially Firefly and Serenity fans, will be able to read and immerse themselves in a story of war, life, hardship and faith. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed the method used to tell the story but i admit i am disappointed in the results of the story...I hoped for more.

  • Mar 31, 2011 angel from Madrid

    A great comic.(Not only for Firefly's fans )

  • Mar 02, 2011 Kerry from Wigan, UK

Great book, would thoroughly recommend to any Firefly/Serenity fan. Brilliant artwork and writing. Service from TFAW was excellent as usual. When my original copy of this was lost in the UK post system they organised a replacement very quickly and at no extra charge to me. Couldn't recommend them as a retailer any higher, they're customer service is exceptional.

  • Feb 24, 2011 Tom from West

Excellent story, worthy of it's own film/video episode. Gives tremendous insight into a previously very mysterious character. Very well told and the reverse chronology holds your interest, building backwards from the man we think we know to/from the man he started as.

  • Feb 15, 2011 Dorci from Indian Springs, NV

It was nice to get some background on our "not-so-perfect" shepherd!

  • Jan 12, 2011 Kathleen from Dubai

Excellent story as always - surprise twist to root of Shepard's story!!

  • Jan 12, 2011 Mark from Enola

Nice read. It was good to finally get the background story of Shepherd. The tale definetly fills in the blanks for this charactor. I guess that leaves Inara for the next story.

  • Jan 12, 2011 Mike from Raleigh, NC

Finally getting to see the story of Shepherd Book's mysterious past is wonderful. This tale, told in a unique way, is satisfying to a long-time Firefly fan.

  • Jan 10, 2011 Campbell from Australia

An extremely well written answer to the secrets that have been getting to many Firefly fans for so long. Quite short, but paced very well; extremely engaging.

  • Jan 01, 2011 christopher from Whitefish ,Montana

LIke peeling an onion of Shepherd's life. Some great twists and interesting(suprising) origins of this great character. Had my own ideas and so gave just the 4 for knocking out my own heads story.

  • Jan 01, 2011 Bonnie from VA

this ws a great story and it is so beliveable as the back ground story. He was an anchorfor the other charactors in the series and aways the voice of calm and reason.Ihope there are more stories that tell how he became the man he was in the series.Want to see backgrouns on the the others also.

  • Dec 30, 2010 Eric from Alvarado, TX

Not worth the long wait. We have gotten snippets and clues to Shepherd Book's past but the story presented in "The Shepherd's Tale" doesn't track with the already established canon.

Additionally, the working backwards in time approach is more distracting than helping for the story. Not worth the wait nor the purchase. If you are a Serenity fan this is one you'll be disappointed in.

  • Dec 28, 2010 Chuck from CA

Really expected more. Actually contradicts what occurred in the Firefly series.

  • Dec 27, 2010 Amie from Missouri

It was great to finally read his story, though there was one major flaw that conflicted with the series but all in all it was a good read.

  • Dec 26, 2010 Kevin from Hamilton, Canada

It was great to learn some more about Firefly's most mysterious and intriguing character. This graphic novel is brief, and doesn't answer everything in detail, but it at least gives you an idea of Book's fascinating past.

  • Dec 21, 2010 Jordan Placer from Edinboro, PA

I expected a bit more out of this, but I was not disappointed. :)

  • Dec 20, 2010 Luccia from The Desert

Solid story, enhanced by the non-linear exposition. Book is revealed to be an even more complex character than I imagined.

  • Dec 19, 2010 michael jackson from cheyenne, WY

  • Dec 18, 2010 michael from glendale arizona

beautiful artwork and captivating story, absolutely loved it

  • Dec 17, 2010 Janet Mcnulty from Southampton, HANTS

This fills in Book's previous life brilliantly. Who'd have thought he played such a pivotal role. I read it forwards first and then read the scenes backwards to get his life in chronological sequence. Loved it.

  • Dec 15, 2010 Nadine from Calgary, AB Canada

Finally some answers - amazing book!! Buy it!

  • Dec 14, 2010 Andy from Christchurch, New Zealand

Well, that was a great bit of background on the shepherd. Not at all what I had expected, (it's ok, no spoilers here) but a great story, enlightening us to one of my favourite characters from the Fire Fly 'verse. Exceptionally well written and finished. I loved it!

  • Dec 14, 2010 Richard from Port Orchard, WA, USA

An excellent offerring and a fitting tribute to the character Ron Glass brought to life. A must have for fans!

  • Dec 14, 2010 Richard from Albany, NY

The back-story we have all been waiting to hear. Very good cover and main graphics - very true to life. Also good story graphics, though our favorite characters are simply suggested visually in middle range focus shots or long-distance body outlines. LOVED the story and how it backed step by step through Shepherd Books life history, how each step led to the next, and the surprise twist half-way through (no spoilers!).

Excellent price for a hard-covered and hefty-paged graphic novel that lets us fans follow one of our beloved characters to his true origins (always a mystery - a lock we wished we had the key for). Now -- next -- Kayley?

  • Dec 14, 2010 Joshua from Colorado

Great comic but I wish it went into a little more detail about his life before Firefly. I hope there are a lot more Book stories to come!

  • Dec 14, 2010 Vincent from Texas

I really expected more. What we get instead of a true background is a series of vignettes strung on a loose string of plausibility. Wasn't satisfying at all and I was disappointed. I don't recommend it. Leave the background of Shepherd Book to your imagination - you'll be happy you did.

  • Dec 14, 2010 Chuck from Los Angeles, CA

Great story, great art, prompt delivery. Thank you!

  • Dec 13, 2010 Michael from OCONUS

I hope they make more of these books

  • Dec 12, 2010 Ryan from United States

The Shepherd's Tale is a riveting Graphic Novel about Firefly and Serenity's Shepherd Book. As one of the most mysterious characters aboard Serenity, Book's story is never fully told, and his mysterious past, only hinted at, is one of the most disappointing aspects of the cancellation of Firefly. The mysterious Book joins the crew of Serenity from an Abbey, but his specialized knowledge of weaponry and the Alliance suggest there is more to him than just a simple preacher.

The Shepherd's Tale is a suspenseful follow up to Firefly and Serenity, beginning with his death, then travelling back in time. With every new twist and turn, some questions about his life are answered while even more are raised. This Graphic Novel is truly excellent and is a must have for all committed followers of Firefly, Serenity and the Whedonverse.

  • Dec 11, 2010 Ben from California

Even though it was shorter than I had hoped, it still gave me a clear understanding of who Book really was. I learned more about his character and thoroughly enjoyed reading it
