Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and scribe of Marvel's Astonishing X-Men, unveils a previously unknown chapter in the lives of his favorite band of space brigands in this comics prequel of the Serenity feature film, the big-budget follow-up to Whedon's cult-hit TV show Firefly.

Penned by Whedon and Brett Matthews, who wrote several episodes of Firefly as well as Dark Horse's final Angel comics series and the animated Chronicles of Riddick feature "Dark Fury," Serenity follows a ship full of mercenaries, fugitives, and one law-abiding prostitute in their pursuit for fast cash and a little peace along the fringes of space. The ragtag crew of Serenity take on a scavenger mission with the hopes of earning enough dough to disappear for a while. Only too late do they realize the whole gig is orchestrated by an old enemy eager to remake their acquainitance with the help of some covert-operatives known only as the Blue Gloves.

Artist Will Conrad (Marvel's Elektra and Witches) and colorist Laura Martin (Astonishing X-Men and The Ultimates) paint a rough and wild world of adventure across a strange and dangerous universe, in this not-to-be-missed tale straight from the brain of pop-culture mastermind Joss Whedon!

I am a huge fan of the show/movie and I thought this was absolutely spectacular. I think the characters translated very well from the screen to graphic novel. The writing is terrific and though the inclusion of Chinese is a bit clunky for those who don't speak it (myself included) it is just the writers being true to the series, which is much appreciated. I thought this was a great addition to the mythos and Firefly/Serenity world. Well worth the purchase/read. A definite 5 stars for me.

  • Aug 25, 2010 Matt from Florida

Though I would like to review Serenity: Those Left Behind separate from its predecessors, its hard to avoid comparing it with the live action series and movie. The full color illustrations portray the setting and characters of Serenity effectively(except for Simon). The writing is spot on with each character, but the inclusion of Chinese words just doesnt have the same effect.

Although I can appreciate the devotion to the setting, reading Chinese characters without knowing what they sound like distract from the dialog. The overall story is enjoyable and is akin to the rest of the series. Having already seen how the characters end up in the movie, I didnt feel a sense of urgency when reading through the comic or when I finished it as I did when watching an episode of Firefly.

I believe a different set of characters would have been better, and a lot more interesting for this series. As for the actual product, this was my first TPB, but I like the quality of the cover and colored pages. I am interested in the next couple installments of the comic, but Im going to have to put them on hold for now.

  • Apr 10, 2010 Richard from Port Orchard, WA

I like the writing and the art is good, but some of the faces don't quite seem to match in some frames. Still, it's well worth the price!

  • Mar 11, 2010 Joel from Oak Hills, CA

I love Firefly & Serenity. Haven't watched an episode of Firefly since last night. But I have to admit I was disappointed by this a bit.

Perhaps the translation from screen to graphic novel just didn't work that well for me. It seemed all too predictable and just filled in the gaps between Firefly and Serenity. The problem is that those gaps really didn't need filling in, you can figure them out for yourself.

The story managed to be uninteresting, which is a first for the firefly universe to me. On the whole, not what I expected, and just ok.

  • Jul 23, 2009 Anthony from Australia

An invalualbe additional to the Firefly/Serenity storyline, bridges the gap nicely between the end of Firefly and the Serenity movie, very well done, was just as enjoyable as another episode of Firefly, very pleased.

  • May 21, 2009 Simon Parker from Camberwell, Victoria

This was quite an enjoyable story, lining Firefly to Serenity. It filled in some of the gaps and was entertaining in its own right. The illustrations were quite good, with recognisable likenesses for the characters.

  • Apr 23, 2009 Aaron from Anchortown

I read it online and then had to own the original. It is the gap all FireFly fans deserve.

  • Apr 14, 2009 Jesse from Lancaster, PA

The only beef with this book that I have is the size of the guns that the crooks wield in the beginning. But hey, it's a comic book. The story is great and the TPB is peppered with full-page, gighly detailed drawings of the crew. This is a must read for any Serenity/Firefly fan!

  • Apr 08, 2009 John from Texas

    Great book, Recommended heartily

  • Apr 08, 2009 Annie Breton from La Malbaie, Québec

A must have. If you had loved the TV show and the movie, you will like this too. All what makes the success of Serenity is there.

  • Mar 14, 2009 Richard from Washington AC (Above California)

Great to see a continuation of a missed adventure, looking forward to additional material

  • Feb 19, 2009 Jared Wiggins from Louisiana

You can almost hear the theme to Firefly as you read this comic. Great at snipping those loose ends between the tv show and its movie final. Art is awesome and easy to follow. Not to confusing for those who have never entered into the world of Whedon's Firefly. Love the ending with Mal and his thoughts.

  • Oct 06, 2008 Trevor L. from 602 West Lincoln

Very good comic. I wish I had bought it earlier because I didn't expect it to be so good. I especially like how well the characters are drawn, and how well the story moves along. It's just shiny.

  • Sep 09, 2008 Richard from Albany, NY or further out on the fringe

Fans will love this, and who else would buy it? The full page renderings of our favorite characters are wonderful. The story is good - you feel Joss all over these pages - and the panels are excellently drawn and colored. Sometimes they find it hard to capture the look of the real characters in the action panels, but hey, I know I couldn't do better.

Every character gets a good resemblance at some point or another except for River - they can't quite get her down. All in all, a treat to go on another adventure with the Serenity crew on a literate story that furthers the legends (including two-by-two-hands-of-blue) and is drawn so well! We also learn why Shepherd Book and Anara are not with the crew when the movie Serenity begins, hence the title "Those Left Behind." I loved it.

  • Jul 20, 2008 Michelle Mollomini from Willowbank Australia

Love love this! A brilliant addition to the DVD and the movie! As a comic fan it's great to now have your favorite shows be able to continue in this medium!

A *shiny* addition to the Firefly canon.

  • Jun 13, 2008 Jeff from Toms River

Great comic that fills in the missing information from TV Series to movie.

Great art and story.. fills in the blanks perfectly from the last episode (Objects in Space) to the movie Serenity. Worth every penny if you are a Firefly fan..

    Love it!

  • Sep 28, 2007 Rohan Genrich from Australia

    A good buy.

  • Sep 17, 2007 Jacqui from Brooklyn

Awesome! I felt like I was watching an episode. More of these might even dull the pain of the show getting cancelled.

  • Sep 16, 2007 Faith from Missouri

....great for Firefly fans...that can't get enough!

  • Sep 14, 2007 Matthew from Victoria, BC, Canada

An excellent bridge between the series and the film. I just wish there was more to it.

  • Sep 06, 2007 Lahela from HI

I was especially impressed with the portrait drawings of each character and appreciate the in-between story inserted between TV show ending and movie.

  • Aug 23, 2007 Bridz from Australia

A great bridge between the show and the movie. the characters are recognizable, the artwork is incredible, and I loved the story. A must have for all firefly fans!

  • Aug 17, 2007 Ali from Saudi Arabia

Excellent novel, too bad they canceled the series but hopefully there will be another movie.

  • Aug 16, 2007 Matthew from New York, NY

Joss writes comics as well as he does TV. I could hear the characters voices as I read.

  • Aug 15, 2007 Peggy from Austin, TX

We were really disappointed at the lack of story content. Nothing happened. What was it even about? Fluff and filler.

  • Aug 11, 2007 Marcus from New York

Excellent additional story for Firefly fans and nice gap filler between the show and the movie.

  • Aug 08, 2007 Kevin from home ,Utah

I was just enjoying the TV show when it was canceled. I love the Universe. I wanted more. Then the movie came. But I wanted more. Thank you for a little more, I enjoyed the TPB. thank you :)

  • Jul 19, 2007 Eulene from Michigan

Great! Nothing else compares when Joss Whedon is writing the dialogue. You can hear the actors voices saying the lines. Loved the full page artists renderings of the characters...beautiful!

  • Jul 11, 2007 Rhona Garcia-Glavey from Bronx, NY

Great bridge between the series and the movie!

  • Jun 28, 2007 Michael from Tulsa, OK

An absolute must for Firefly fans!

  • Jun 04, 2007 Jessica from Charlotte, NC

I almost gave it 4 stars but that's just because I'm a Browncoat and always want more. Also, I thought with a name like "Those Left Behind" AND the fact that the story precedes the movie, I thought this would show us how Book left and Inara being dropped off. Anyway, it's still awesome.

  • Jun 01, 2007 kenneth from Chicago

It's great but I thought it was something else. Nice to have all the comics I have in one book.

  • May 14, 2007 Christina from Houston, Texas

Very well done. Really filled out the story between the series and the movie. Beautiful illustration.

  • May 13, 2007 Anthony from Louisiana

Is was ok, I am a big fan of the television series and the movie. I was expecting something more dramatic. It did a good job filling in some of the gaps, but certainly not all of them. It left me wanting for more. I am glad Joss Whedon colaborated with the project.

The artwork was great. I did think it would be delivered sooner than it was, I was disappointed with the wait. Other than that, good book, great service, I think I'm just used to television to be my imagination.

  • Apr 18, 2007 Stephen from Michigan

Having been a HUGE fan of the TV show, this comic is bitter-sweet. It was sweet to have another adventure with Captain Reynolds and the crew, but it was just a reminder of how bitter I am toward the pinheads at FOX TV who didn't realize a great TV show when they saw one, and actually canceled this show way before its time.

My only knock on the comic is that it's too short. I would have liked to see it fill in a few more gaps as the story progressed.

  • Apr 16, 2007 Stephen from KC, MO

Great story if you have watched Firefly.

  • Apr 10, 2007 Christine from Florida

    Great job!

  • Apr 05, 2007 Christina from Bloomsburg, PA

Whedon's follow up graphic novel answers several questions raised in the series but not addressed in the film.

  • Mar 26, 2007 Alisande from Fairfax, VA

Actually my first comic book, and I wasn't disappointed. Very good.

  • Mar 17, 2007 Nanda from The Netherlands

    In excellent condition. Thanks

  • Mar 12, 2007 padraig from Ireland

Brilliant for start to finish! Picks up were the tv show ended. I hope theres more! I do miss the show!

  • Mar 06, 2007 Evan from CA

Great writing, just as entertaining as the series and movie, but the story felt very slapped together, while not answering many questions, at least not in a terribly interesting way.

  • Feb 18, 2007 Thomas from Minnesota

It's a brilliant prelude to the movie Serenity. Well written, well drawn, and stays beautifully in the same tone as both the TV series and the film.

  • Feb 03, 2007 Susheel from San Francisco

Pretty good, but you expect a better story from the Firefly series.

  • Feb 03, 2007 Mark from Enola, PA

Nice to see all three episodes together. Nice story to bridge the gap between Firefly and Serenity. My favorite part had to be the intro by Nathan Fillion. This filled all my expectations 5 stars.

  • Jan 27, 2007 Matthias from Belgium

Nice comic that explains some things when you see the movie. Too bad it's not longer. Hope to see more comics based on the Serenity universe!
