Legacy isn't a dirty word, but it's an irrelevant one. It's not important what our parents did. It matters what WE do. Someone has to save the world. You're someone. Do the math. The critically acclaimed team of Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie reinvent the teen super-hero comic for the 21st century, uniting Wiccan, Hulkling and Kate "Hawkeye" Bishop with Kid Loki, Marvel Boy and Ms. America. No pressure, right? As a figure from Loki's past emerges, Wiccan makes a horrible mistake that comes back to bite everyone on their communal posteriors. Fight scenes! Fake IDs! Plentiful feels! (a.k.a. 'meaningful emotional character beats' for people who aren't on tumblr.) Young Avengers is as NOW! as the air in your lungs and twice as vital. Hyperbole is the BEST! THING! EVER!
|YOUNG AVENGERS (2013) #1-5 and material from MARVEL NOW! POINT ONE #1.

I thought this was an intense Årade back. It really focused a lot on Hulking and Wiccan's relationship. It's complicated shapes shifter and Son of Scarlet Witch business. The main source of comedy and of course Mischief was Loki. He knew the right words to manipulate or to stir up feelings.
I picked this up for Miss America Chavez. I heard she's getting her own series. She'll be the first gay Hispanic female in Marvel comics to do so.
Hawkeye Kate Bishop came off as an everyday girl that had archery lessons. Her Interstellar Marvel Boy boyfriend reminds me of Starfire from DC comics. An alien trying to grasp earth bound customs. These teenagers work together like their predecessors. The cause is always more important than feelings. Add teenage hormones and what do you get?

I would strongly recommend reading Gillen's Journey into Mystery vol. 1 and 2 before reading this, because otherwise you will be so very lost, my friend. You'll probably also want to make sure you've read the preceding lines- Siege gets referenced, but isn't essential. Secret Invasion and Civil War get referenced a little more heavily, but most essential to Understanding Plot would be Children's Crusade. Aaaand you might want to pick up all three volumes of this at once, so you can read them all in succession, because cliffhangers.
That said, I was on the edge of my seat the ENTIRE TIME. The artwork is very distinctive and very YA-ish, with bold lines and bright colors. It starts off introducing some new characters, but never fear - your faves will be right there with the [major plot spoilers] that you'll love.
